In the late-summer light of August 2026, Athens became an almost unbelievable meeting point. Emerging leaders from Israel and Palestine, as well as from the Gulf, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Syria and Gaza — both ROPES alumni and first-time participants — sat down together at a moment when such a gathering felt nearly impossible.

The region was still catching its breath after months of intense war between Israel and Iran. A fragile ceasefire hung over everything. Against that backdrop, the ROPES Annual Summit felt not just timely, but rare: a space that almost never opens.

They came to wrestle with radicalization through public diplomacy, strategic communication, education, media, storytelling and direct conversation. They looked at how narratives and information environments can deepen division — and how different stories, better communication and real dialogue can build resilience and create room for understanding.

For many, it was the first time they had ever met people from the other side of the region’s deepest lines. Assumptions cracked in real time. Perspectives widened. Shared experiences and unexpected common ground began to appear.

Returning alumni deepened existing ties; new voices brought fresh energy into the network. What started in Athens did not stay in the conference room. Relationships formed that can continue long after the summit ends.

In a moment of profound uncertainty, ROPES showed why these spaces matter: so that emerging leaders can actually listen to one another, speak across divides, and begin building the human connections a more peaceful and cooperative Middle East will need. We can only get there through dialogue, cooperation and shared efforts of brave leadership that believes in peace!
